Frequent, convenient and ridiculously inexpensive, the tram and metro system in Budapest is the best way to get around the city. Buy a 24-hour card for HUF 1,400, a 3 day travel card (72-hour) for HUF 3,850 or a 7 day travel card for HUF 4,600 and use the buses, trams and underground to your heart's content. My advice is to avoid the more expensive Budapest Card unless you thoroughly research which galleries and museums honour it; in my experience it is very few.
Buy your travel card at the ticket counter in any main metro station, you don't need ID, just show it when requested by one of the many guards who patrol the system.
