Today is St Martin's Day, 11 November 2011. In Hungary if you want to ensure a whole year free of hunger you must eat goose on St Martin's day.
Why Goose?
According to legend, Martin was reluctant to become a bishop after being elected one by the people and he tried to hide from them. However he chose a barn full of geese as his hiding place which didn't prove to be a very sensible move. The geese immediately started making a real noise which gave away his location to the people who were looking for him.
And that’s why the Hungarian people eat goose on St Martin's day. You can either go out to a restaurant for a multi-course feast and make an occasion of it or have something simpler at home with friends.
