Crowns
Dental crowns are the ideal restoration for teeth that have broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. The crown completely covers and protects the tooth underneath and restores it to its proper shape and size. Without placing a crown over the damaged natural tooth, the natural tooth might eventually disintegrate because it is so weak.
Crowns are also used to change the shape of teeth. If you have very large gaps between the teeth, the teeth are significantly out of alignment, the teeth are significantly discoloured or the teeth are crooked, then crowns are what you need.
Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials and are fixed in place with special dental adhesive.

Bridges / Bridgework
A bridge is a number of crowns joined together
which allows one or more missing teeth to be replaced without using
a denture or dental implant. The missing tooth is replaced with a
pontic tooth, which is fused between two crowns that are permanently
attached to the adjacent teeth. So the new tooth is held in place
by being attached on each side to an adjacent crowned tooth.
The disadvantage of bridges is that the teeth either
side of the gap have to be crowned in order to accept the bridge.
However without a bridge or implant the unsupported teeth will tend
to tilt toward the gap altering the alignment of the occlusion and
reducing the efficiency of the bite.

Zirconium Oxide Crowns
Fantastic quality and aesthetics.
Zirconium oxide is a very strong material and
is used in the manufacture of our Zeno zirconium oxide crowns and
bridgework.
These crowns will not corrode and the normal black
gum line that you might see around some other crowns,
will not occur.
Zirconium Oxide crowns are much less sensitive
in the mouth than some other crowns and uncomfortable hot and
cold sensations which you might feel with other crowns do not normally
occur. Patients with allergies will not normally suffer
from any adverse reactions with these crowns.
Our Zirconium Oxide crowns look fantastic. Side
by side with a natural tooth it is very hard to detect which is
the natural tooth and which is the zirconium oxide crown. You
will be utterly amazed by the results.

Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns
Porcelain covered crowns (otherwise known as porcelain on metal crowns, or porcelain fused to metal crowns) are often used for
back teeth. The metal substructure gives strength and support
to the porcelain but the metal layer reduces the translucency
of the crown making it appear opaque and duller than a natural
tooth.
Preparation
After the area has been numbed, the tooth that
is to be crowned is prepared by grinding it to a certain shape
so that it can support the new crown. An impression is made of
the prepared tooth and gum, and a temporary crown is normally
placed on top of the prepared tooth. The temporary crown gives
the prepared tooth a much better look and it also helps with reducing
any sensitivity in the area. The lab makes the permanent crown
from the impression that has been taken and 5 days later the temporary
crown is removed and the permanent new crown is fitted. |
