- Toothache, pain or sensitivity - often worse
after hot or cold foods or drinks
- Visible cavities in the teeth
- Bad breath - a sign of infection or gum disease
However pain may not be experienced until tooth decay is more advanced. Any tooth decay requires removing as soon as possible and the tooth restored with dental fillings such as composite resin, porcelain or gold in order, to maintain health and function.
Fillings
Fillings are used to treat decayed or damaged teeth. Old worn fillings may also sometimes have to be replaced.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings, commonly known as white fillings, have virtually replaced mercury amalgam fillings. They are more aesthetically pleasing and there is no risk of mercury toxicity. They can wear out slightly faster in larger cavities than amalgam fillings although the strength of modern composite fillings has significantly improved since their introduction in the 1960s.
After a local anaesthetic has numbed the area the decayed portion of tooth is carefully removed. The tooth is then prepared and the composite filling is bonded in place with a high intensity light to harden the area.

Gradia Inlays and Onlays
Gradia inlays and onlays are used for very large cavities or where a large amount of the tooth has to be restored and a filling is not possible. They are considered to be a more permanent solution to tooth decay than fillings.
After preparation of the tooth the dentist takes an impression. The inlays/onlays are then made in the lab and then bonded to the tooth by the dentist in the clinic. They are usually placed in back teeth and are stronger and longer lasting than composite fillings. They have an excellent cosmetic appearance.
An onlay covers one or more cusp of a tooth and is more likely to be used if the tooth has fractured. An inlay sits inside the cusps of a tooth.

Removing Amalgam Fillings
Many patients want their amalgam fillings removed for health and aesthetic reasons. To protect the patient during removal we use a special exhaust system and increase the suction so that it minimises any mercury uptake.
