Bill's Review of the Hotel Kempinski in Budapest
I keep going back to the Kempinski (known to its regulars as the "Kempi"). It's a five star hotel so you have expectations. You get five star service in a European way, quietly and discretely not like the US five star hotels with their ranks of waving palms. Stroll into reception: nod to the uniformed attendant at the door and calmly sit down, read a newspaper, meet a friend, check your emails, have a coffee, listen to the live music; sometimes piano; sometimes duet or trio, nearly always something by Bartok. Relax and watch people coming and going.
Fancy a beer? Come with me through the central cafe and chat area, past the restaurant, along the corridor to the Brauhaus, this is one of my favourite places in Budapest, it feels like it has it's own individual nature from an earlier time, I always read through the entire beer menu but end up ordering Dreher, ice cold in a tall glass. The Brauhaus is part of the Kempi so the standards of service are impeccable and the beer is excellent, you can also eat there: choose the daily special to get the same food as you would have in the restaurant at bistro prices.
My two whinges: the large screen TV's in the Brauhaus, thankfully the sound is always on mute and amusingly they always show minority interest sport (when the Lions were playing France in the six nations the TV in the Brauhaus was showing women's boxing from East Germany!). My second whinge is the cost of breakfast: £35 per person seems over the top when you can get bacon and eggs for two for less than a fiver in any of half a dozen cafes within five minutes walk. Apart from that I have absolutely no complaints about this hotel.

This is my favourite 5 star hotel in Budapest. From the minute you arrive you feel special. The staff have a wonderful way of treating you. They are discrete, polite and helpful.
On one trip my Palm refused to download my emails and within seconds someone with a computer background had sorted it all out for me. He knew immediately what was wrong and we changed one of the settings. It was just a Palm! The free wi-fi throughout the entire hotel is a great help.
Whether you come to this hotel on business or as a tourist you will seriously appreciate this wonderful hotel. The bedrooms are extremely comfortable - the bedding and the beds are excellent quality - I am very fussy! The bathrooms are very spacious and have everything you need, including a separate shower cubicle rather than a shower over the bath.
Try and get breakfast included in your package. It is absolutely sumptuous and has absolutely everything you would ever want - champagne, smoked salmon, eggs, cheese, ham, bread - I could go on for ever. However the breakfast is expensive unless you get it included in your package.
In summary this hotel is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in.
